Assembly Row, where the attraction is located, was celebrating it’s fifth year anniversary and asked me to create a display for a nearby shop window.

Design Process

I toured Assembly Row and gathered reference photos of the various buildings in the area to be incorporated into my collage. To “convert” the photos to LEGO, I simplified them by overlaying basic geometric patterns in LEGO colors. I then used Bricksaic to plan out the mural in a basic LEGO grid.

With this guideline I was able to start building the model, following the rough shapes of the pattern and covering every inch with a random assortment of LEGO elements in just the right colors. The unique texture created by the different pieces allowed for interesting shading and a cohesive whole at a distance. I also used this assortment of bricks to provide hundreds of points of interest up close, including a rowboat, bananas, a crab, and many others.
