USS Cassin Young
I designed and built this scale model of the USS Cassin Young Destroyer Ship for its 75th Anniversary. The build is now on permanent display at The Constitution Museum in Boston.
Design Process
The Museum was able to provide plans and a sectional cutaway of the ship. Tracing these and overlaying LEGO patterns allowed me to reinterpret the subtle curves of the ship with layers of rectangular brick. I also toured the ship and took reference photos to ensure I was able to capture iconic details perfectly.
Photos of the finished build show the detail I was recreating in the model based on my reference photos. The final build is 6 feet long, including the water base, and 15 inches tall. It is built with 9,121 bricks and took a total of 46 hours to complete.
The model was unveiled at the 75th Anniversary Event in front of the real USS Cassin Young.
