The Grinch
The Wang Theater regularly requested builds based on shows that were performed there. We would unveil the model before a Saturday performance, and usually provided live demonstrations and other activities for attendees.
The Grinch
I was able to build a 4-foot model of the Grinch for their production of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical.” The challenge for this model was deciding his position so that he would be structurally sound. Many of Dr. Seuss’ designs feature large, pear shaped bodies and very thin limbs, which are difficult to support and balance the disproportionate weight of the torso and head. My solution was to take the weight off of his legs altogether, and pose him sitting and plotting his holiday heist. This model was on display at the theater for the run of the show and is displayed in the Attraction each year for the holiday season.

Elf
A replica of Buddy from “Elf: The Musical” was designed to be a live build before the show started. The kids joined me at the table and built the snowflakes to add to the picture.
I designed the model to be 3D, with the character sticking out from the background. While designing a live build, I always tried to make the part that I would be building on location as simple as possible so that I could focus on interacting with people while building. I built the character before the event and planned out the letters to be the “live build” part.

Annie
Annie was created for the run of her musical and is another of my 3D mural pieces.
I created layers to give the mural more depth. Sandy the dog is built with LEGO plates, while the character Annie is built with bricks so that it sticks out further than Sandy. This accentuates the illusion that Annie is sitting in front of Sandy.
